"The City of Bridges"
Pittsburgh was incorporated as a borough in 1794 and later as a city in 1816. It is currently the 2nd largest city in Pennsylvania. It is located on the intersection of the Ohio River, the Monongahela River and the Allegheny River. Point State Park sits at the intersection point.
In April 1845, a significant fire destroyed 1000 buildings in the center of the city. 50+ acres were effected.
Pittsburgh is known for its history as a 'steel' town. In 1892, steel workers strike and were locked out. Fights erupted between the steel workers and those brought into replace them. The National Guard was brought in to restore order. In 1901, the U.S. Steel Corporation was formed, and by 1911 Pittsburgh was producing 30%-50% of the nation's steel. Decades of manufacturing deteriorated the air and water quality in the region.
In a complete turnaround, Pittsburgh is now known as a technology, healthcare and financial services center with high livability standards.
