Providence is the capital of Rhode Island and it is the 3rd largest city in New England.

Providence is nicknamed "The Renaissance City".

Providence was first settled in June 1636 by Roger Williams a religious exile from the Massachusetts Bay Colony. He named the area in honor of "God's merciful Providence" to bring him there.

At the time of the 2000 census, the city of Providence had a population of 173,618 living in 62,389 households. The median age was 28.1 yrs.
