"The City by the Bay"
In 1848-49 the lure of gold greatly increased the population of San Francisco. In 1859 the silver discoveries like the Comstock Load raised population again.
In April of 1906 a major earthquake hit Northern California. The earthquake and the resulting fires destroyed most of the city of San Francisco. It is estimated that 56% of the citizens were left homeless. Property damage was in excess of $400 million.
In October of 1989 a magnitude 7.1 quake hit the Bay area collapsing the San Francisco - Oakland Bay Bridge. Power was out for a few days. Multiple fires broke out across the city.
San Francisco is known for its fog. It is always there. If it is not over the western part of the city it is hovering off the coast.
